EV Charger Installation Hawthorn

If you drive an EV and live in Hawthorn, the worry behind a home charger is usually the same one: whether fitting a 7kW unit means tearing out the switchboard first. It does not always, and a smart charger that manages its own draw can often share an older board without a full upgrade. As an A-Grade licensed and insured contractor, Martin Turnbull has run Smartlec Electrical Solutions since 2017. He covers Hawthorn from nearby Prahran. Tell us the car, where it parks and roughly where your switchboard sits, and a fixed price comes back before anything is mounted on the wall.

Smart charging that works around an older Hawthorn board

Here is the part that changes the whole job on a period home. A standard 7kW charger pulls hard and steadily for hours, and on a board already carrying ducted heating, an induction cooktop and a hot water service, there may be no headroom left for it. The old answer was a switchboard or mains upgrade before the charger could go in, and often that is still the right call.

But a smart charger gives you a second option worth knowing about. A dynamic-load-managed unit measures what the rest of the house is drawing in real time and throttles itself to fit underneath the supply, easing back when the oven and the heater are both on, then ramping up once the load drops away overnight. On a fair share of older Hawthorn homes that is enough to put a charger in without touching the board, because the charger simply never asks for more than the house can spare. It is not a guarantee, and a board genuinely past its limit still needs upgrading. So we assess your supply, tell you whether load management clears it or the board needs work, and let you decide with the real number in front of you.

Hawthorn: a $99 inspection, credited when you go ahead

Almost no installer publishes a real price for this, because on a Hawthorn home the reason sits inside the meter box: the run from the board to the car, the supply you have, and whether load management clears the board or it needs upgrading first. A round figure quoted down the phone is a guess at a job nobody has seen.

So we charge a $99 inspection to assess it properly and hand you a fixed, itemised quote, and that $99 comes off the bill the moment you go ahead. On a simpler install we can often scope it from clear photos of your switchboard and meter rather than a visit. Either way the price is locked before work starts, with no hourly rate ticking over and no surprise on the invoice.

Wires the charger and tunes the load: Smartlec

A networked charger is only as good as the setup behind it. Getting dynamic load management to actually protect an older board means the dedicated circuit, the board assessment and the charger's load settings are configured together, by someone who understands the supply they are working with. The credentials behind that work carry more weight on a charger than on most jobs, because a unit drawing near its limit for hours, night after night, is unforgiving of a shortcut that stays hidden until heat finds it. Each of these is something you can check before you hand the work over:

  • Martin Turnbull, our owner, is an A-Grade licensed electrician across domestic and commercial work.
  • Registered Electrical Contractor, REC 27608, a licence number you can look up rather than take on trust.
  • A lifetime workmanship warranty on what we install, where many installers stop at twelve months.
  • Full $20 million public liability cover, so the supply feeding your charger is properly insured.
  • Operating since 2017, with more than 3,000 customers served and a 4.9-star rating from 32 reviews.

One licence for the circuit, the board and the charger

Plenty of EV charger installers are exactly that, charger fitters, and they bring in a separate electrician for the circuit and anything the switchboard needs. Martin works the other way around: a licensed electrician who fits chargers, so the circuit, the board and the charger are one job and one person answerable for it.

That matters most on exactly the homes Hawthorn is full of. When the assessment shows the board does need work after all, it is the difference between a second contractor to chase and an upgrade that carries the same warranty as the charger, handled by the same Hawthorn electrician on the one visit. If a wider electrical safety check makes sense while the cover is off, we will say so, and just as plainly when the board you have is fine as it stands.

Choosing the charger: 7kW or 22kW, single or three phase

Most Hawthorn homes are best matched to a 7kW single-phase charger. It puts back plenty of range overnight for ordinary driving and suits the single-phase supply most houses already run on. A 22kW charger only reaches full speed on three-phase power, which most cars cannot use at home anyway, so it mainly earns its place for a workplace, a fleet, or a home genuinely set up for three phase.

Smart charging is the choice worth making early, and on a period home it earns its keep: beyond the load management that lets it share an older board, a networked unit schedules onto off-peak rates and tracks usage from your phone. We will walk through 7kW against 22kW, and basic against smart, for your car and your supply, rather than steer you to the biggest number on the shelf.

EV charger installation for Hawthorn homes and businesses

A house topping up one car overnight and a Hawthorn business running bays for staff or fleet are different jobs, and Smartlec takes on both. A workplace can mean several units, a supply shared sensibly between them, and load management so the building does not trip when a few cars plug in at five o'clock. The same A-Grade licence covers both, whether the charger lands on a garage wall in Hawthorn East or a pillar in a commercial car park.

A charger rarely arrives as the only job on the list, either. We can also assist if you are weighing up split-system air conditioning, split system for a Hawthorn home, or making the move to get off gas to electric cooking and heating.

Book your Hawthorn EV charger quote

The aim of a period home is a charger that works with the house instead of fighting it, and on most of them that comes down to one honest look at the board and the supply. Phone Martin on 1300 870 531, or send the car you drive, where it parks and a photo of your meter box through the website, and you will get back a fixed price with the lifetime workmanship warranty behind it. Our hours are Monday to Friday 7:00am to 5:30pm and Saturday 7:00am to 3:00pm. Smartlec covers Hawthorn from the Prahran EV hub, with chargers nearby in Kew and Camberwell.

EV Charger Installation Hawthorn FAQs

Not always. A smart charger with dynamic load management can often share an older board by throttling its own draw to fit under the supply, which avoids an upgrade on many homes. We assess your board first and tell you honestly whether load management clears it or the board genuinely needs work before quoting.

It depends on the cable run, your switchboard, and whether your supply is single or three phase, which is why we do not publish a flat figure. We charge a $99 inspection to assess it and give you a fixed quote, and that $99 is waived when you proceed. A simple install can often be quoted from photos of your board.

For most homes, 7kW on single-phase power is the right call: most cars cap their home charging there and it suits the supply houses already have. A 22kW charger only reaches full speed on three-phase power, so it mainly suits workplaces, fleets or three-phase homes. We will advise on your car and supply.

Yes. We install single home chargers and multi-bay commercial and workplace setups, with the shared supply and smart load management a row of chargers needs. Victorian VEU rebates can apply to some energy-efficiency upgrades, with eligibility depending on the work, so we will tell you upfront whether yours qualifies.
