EV Charger Installation South Yarra

Parking is the part most South Yarra townhouses already have handled: a garage, or a tandem space the car sits in overnight. What an EV charger installation here really turns on is whether the board behind that wall can carry the load, and whether the wall itself is wholly yours to drill or shared with the unit next door. Martin Turnbull, a licensed A-Grade electrician who has run Smartlec since 2017, has fitted enough chargers on local townhouses and units to settle both before quoting.

Smartlec Electrical Solutions covers the area from a base in nearby Prahran, right next door. Tell us the dwelling and where the board sits, and a firm number comes back before anything is fixed to the wall.

Charging an EV on a South Yarra townhouse or apartment

A standalone house with a driveway is the simple version of this job. South Yarra runs more to townhouses and newer apartments, which shifts the first questions. A townhouse usually has the part that matters most, your own garage or tandem space, but the wall, boundary or meter can still be shared with the unit next door. A unit with a basement bay brings the building into it, since a charger there is best fed from your own meter and the cable route may cross common property.

The City of Stonnington has also been running an EV charger trial, with public chargers mapped to spots around South Yarra. Those are handy for a top-up while you are out, but not the overnight fill the car you drive daily really wants: a unit on your own wall, on its own circuit, charging at a cheaper rate while you sleep. We look at where your car actually parks and tell you straight what suits it.

What it costs: the $99 inspection, waived if you go ahead

Almost nobody publishes a real price for an EV charger install, because the charger is a small part of it. What sets the cost is the run from the board to where the car parks, whether the switchboard has room, and whether the home is on single or three-phase supply. A figure quoted without seeing any of that is a guess.

So we charge a $99 inspection to assess the job properly and hand you a fixed, itemised quote, and that $99 is waived in full the moment you go ahead. A straightforward townhouse install can often be scoped from a few clear photos of your board, meter and parking spot. Either way the price is locked before work starts, so there is no hourly meter and no surprise on the invoice.

Will a newer South Yarra board take the load?

A newer townhouse or apartment usually starts ahead here, because the board went into a more recent standard than the old terrace stock nearby and often has a spare way or two to work with. That is a head start, not a guarantee. A 7kW charger is a heavy continuous load, drawing hard for hours at a stretch, and a board already feeding ducted air, an induction cooktop and a hot water unit can be closer to full than it looks. In some homes the honest answer is that the board, or the mains feeding it, wants attention first. On others it is fine as it stands, and we say so just as plainly rather than sell you an upgrade to land the charger.

The same trade does the circuit, not just the charger

A lot of EV charger installers are exactly that, charger fitters, and they bring in a separate electrician for the circuit and the switchboard. Smartlec runs the other way around. Martin is a licensed A-Grade electrician who fits chargers, so the dedicated circuit, the board capacity and the charger itself are one job, one quote and one person answerable for the lot.

That earns its keep when the board does need work: no second contractor to coordinate, and the upgrade carries the same warranty as the charger. It is the same reasoning behind every job a South Yarra electrician takes on here. If a wider electrical safety check makes sense while the cover is off a board you are unsure about, we will say so. And because a charger rarely travels alone on a renovation, split-system air conditioning, or specifically a split system in South Yarra, is the same licensed hands, as is the work to get off gas.

Which charger fits, and whether three-phase is worth it

A 7kW single-phase charger suits most homes and units. It puts plenty of range back overnight for ordinary driving and runs on the single-phase supply most dwellings already have. A 22kW charger only reaches full speed on three-phase power, and most cars cap their home AC charging well below that anyway, so chasing it often buys a speed neither the supply nor the car can use. Three phases earns its place for a workplace, a fleet, or a home genuinely set up for it.

Smart charging is the call worth making early. A networked charger schedules onto off-peak rates and tracks what each session costs, which matters more than raw speed when the car sits on charge all night. Where several bays share one supply, that same load management keeps the building from being pulled past its limit, which is why we take on commercial and multi-bay work as readily as a single home charger.

The cover behind a Smartlec Electrical Solutions charger, and why a townhouse owner should ask for it

A charger runs near its rated load for hours, night after night, and where a townhouse shares a wall or boundary, the work sits close to a neighbour's property as well as your own. A shortcut hidden in that supply does not show on day one. It waits until heat finds it. So the credentials behind the install carry real weight, and each of these you can check before handing over the job:

  • Registered Electrical Contractor (REC) number 27608, with an A-Grade Electrician Licence for domestic and commercial work, a number you can look up rather than take on trust.
  • A lifetime workmanship warranty on what we install.
  • Full $20 million public liability cover, which matters most when work sits near a shared wall or boundary rather than mid-block.
  • Operating since 2017, with more than 3,000 customers served and a 4.9-star rating from 32 reviews.
  • Martin Turnbull leading the job and a small team himself.

Book your South Yarra EV charger quote

A newer board is a head start, not a guarantee, and on a townhouse the wall the charger goes on is worth a second look as well. The only way to settle both is to put eyes on them. Tell us your dwelling, where the car parks and where the board sits, on 1300 870 531 or through the website, and we sort those first, then quote the charger and any board work as one fixed number. The $99 to assess it is credited the moment you book. Hours are Monday to Friday 7:00am to 5:30pm and Saturday 7:00am to 3:00pm. Smartlec covers South Yarra from the Prahran base, with chargers nearby in Richmond and St Kilda.

EV Charger Installation South Yarra FAQs

Usually yes, since your own off-street parking is the part that matters most. The two things to confirm first are whether your board has the spare capacity for a 7kW charger, and whether the wall you would mount it on is wholly yours rather than shared with the unit next door. We check both as part of the quote.

Sometimes, though, a newer South Yarra board has a better chance of having the capacity already. A 7kW charger is a heavy continuous load, and a board close to full may lack the room or the right protection for it. We check that in the quote, and being A-Grade electricians we can do any board or mains work and the charger as one job.

Yes. We install single home chargers and multi-bay commercial and workplace setups, with the shared supply and smart load management a row of chargers needs. Victorian VEU rebates can apply to some energy-efficiency upgrades, with eligibility depending on the work, so we will tell you upfront whether yours qualifies.
